The module focuses on the ship operation techniques, emphasising on the practical aspects of the subject. Thus, the role and functions of the operations department as a link between the ship and its owner, charterer and cargo interests is critically evaluated. The module analyses in detail the voyage instructions (Charter party terms, cargo information, NOR) and the procedures related to the preparation for a sea passage voyage (Routing, charts, bunker calculations). Practical aspects of cargo operations monitoring (cargo holds inspection, cargo handling, special instructions) are addressed. Furthermore, an analysis of required port arrangements (berth confirmation, spares, class, flag surveys, PSC inspections) is provided, incorporating contact with port agents (Notice of readiness, mate’s receipts, freight collection). Finally, emphasis is also attributed on the configuration and control of Budgeting issues, with reference to disbursements, master’s accounts and bunkering costs.
