Introduction to the Tourism Industry and Hotel Operation

This course aims to enhance students’ ability to define and describe the different types of tourism and to understand the general context and importance of tourism and hospitality. In addition, they will cultivate the necessary skills to be able to understand, describe and evaluate the factors affecting tourism development as well as the current trends and challenges of the tourism industry.

Also, students will be able to identify the different types of hotels (e.g. boutique hotel, resort, etc.), the hotel classification and ranking system (e.g. star rating system), the different types of hotel ownership and the main hotel operation departments. In addition, they will be able to identify and understand the various abbreviations used in the tourism industry.

Finally, students will be taught the roles and expectations of different stakeholders and the importance and impact of each stakeholder in the tourism industry.
