Adversity, vulnerability, and children’s right: early intervention

This module is designed to give students a perspective on the vulnerability, children’s rights and the difficulties (social, neurological, and cognitive and more) that follow from childhood adversity including (but not exhausting to) maltreatment, institutionalization and/or poverty. Type, timing and duration of adversity will be discussed as key factors. Emphasis will be placed on understanding how the biological realities of early adversity contribute to various emotional and behavioral problems later in life as well as to the opportunities that early intervention offers to buffer such effects.
