  • What is an Elevator Pitch? - BCA College

    What is an Elevator Pitch?

    What is an Elevator Pitch?

“Hi, my name is Samantha Atcheson, and I am a senior Environmental Sciences major. I am looking for a position that will allow me to use my research and analysis skills. Over the past few years, I’ve been strengthening these skills through my work with a local watershed council on convervation strategies to support water quality and habitats. Eventually, I’d like to develop education programs on water conservation awareness. I read that your organisation is involved in water quality projects. Can you tell me how someone with my experience may fit into your organisation?”

“Hi, I’m Jaime, I am a junior studying psychology, and I am interested in pursuing a career in Human Resources. Based on my interest in HR, this past summer I interned on the recruiting team at Company X which was a great experience. On campus, I am involved in the HR Club and the Finance Club which gives me great exposure to learning more about HR and also about the Finance industry post-graduation. I would really like to spend my summer interning at your company. I think it would be an amazing place to work and help me gain valuable experience.

     What is an Εlevator Pitch?

The Elevator Pitch is the 30-seconds speech you make for yourself so as to convince the potential employer to hire you! Imagine you have only 30 seconds in an elevator trying to persuade your future employer to get you in the team! What would you say about you?

You need to get across your uniqueness and your credibility in a genuine way. This is your Unique Selling Proposition.

When the HR Managers or recruiters ask you in the interview “ Tell me about You”, or “Why should we select you for this position?”, you develop your Elevator Pitch in a few seconds.

Tips to develop your Elevator Pitch

    1. Know your goal in advance!

You need to answer to yourself the following questions:

    • Why this industry?
    • Why this company?
    • What role do I want to get?
    • What is the job I need to do for the company?
    • Am I fit for the job? Do I like it?
    1. State your passion and motivation!

Confirm that you talk about your education, your job experience and state your qualifications and your accomplishments. Make sure that you express your passion, your main interests and how they relat to this industry/role/company

    1. Persuade through your Unique Selling Proposition!

State what characteristics make you a unique applicant for this role and how you can contribute to the team for the best results and outcomes! Relate your experience, skills and traits with the specific position. Explain how your accomplishments indicate that you a good fit for the job

    1. Create rapport and expand the conversation!

After branding yourself in a genuine manner, be interested in making some questions that will help you know better the interviewer and the company. For example, you may ask:

    • What kind of personality do you seek for this job?
    • What are the main duties?
    • Do you have any trainings offered?
    • Is there any evaluation process regarding employee performance appraisals?

    Remember!

When you prepare your Pitch, study it and prepare by practicing! Rehearse with a family member, friend or yourself in front of a camera or mirror. Sound yourself!
