The Law of Carriage of Goods by Sea

Students will be introduced to the bills of lading and charterparty terms. They will be familiarized with their legal aspect and they will be able to distinguish voyage charter parties and time – charter charterparties. The voyage charterparties will be presented and analyzed including the legal issues of the clauses regarding the conditions and warranties, the arrived ship, the freight and the loading operation. In this module it will be analyzed the nature of the time charter, the obligations of charterers, the safe ports, the description of the ship, the hire, the period of hire and the trading limits and the comparison between voyage and time charter. Regarding the bills of lading, their function, role, general purpose and how it is issued under the charter party terms will be analyzed along with the Hague, Hague/Visby and Hamburg rules, limitations and exceptions from carrier’s liability.
